PROTECTING OUR OCEANS WITH AHOI and DEEP TREKKER
A healthy ocean is vital to protecting marine species and habitats while sustaining the livelihoods of coastal communities around the world. Yet climate change is rapidly transforming marine ecosystems. Rising sea levels, stronger storm surges, increasingly intense hurricanes, and shifting weather patterns are reshaping coastlines and threatening the communities that depend on them.
On the west coast of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada lies the Gros Morne region—a landscape renowned for its extraordinary natural beauty and geological significance. Home to Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the region’s fjords, coastal waters, and rugged shoreline have supported ocean-dependent communities for generations.
As the climate shifts, monitoring the health of eelgrass beds, salt marshes, and other rich marine habitats has become increasingly critical to understanding how these ecosystems—and the people who rely on them—are changing.
This film follows researchers from AHOI as they use innovative underwater ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicle) from Deep Trekker to explore these fragile environments. With remotely operated vehicles capable of reaching depths far beyond the limits of human divers, they are uncovering new insights into the hidden world beneath the surface—and the future of these coastal ecosystems.
